Ronneby. Four places you need to see.

An art café on an archipelago island. A cemetery where dead trees became sculpture. A runestone carrying a 1,400-year-old curse. And the most popular summer day in the district - with an auctioneer's hammer and a hot dog.

Four places in Ronneby — each one different, each one with something to give. A short drive in different directions. All worth the detour.

Majas Konstcafé
Torkö

Listerby · Blekinge archipelago

Torkö is a small island in the Blekinge archipelago, reached by driving south at the Listerby roundabout towards Kuggeboda and turning left at the sign. The island is small. You will find it.

Majas Konstcafé is a gallery with café tables in the middle of the Blekinge archipelago - the kind of place that only works because someone decided it would. Each season, artists exhibit inside: watercolour, ceramics, textiles. Outside - or inside if the weather decides - Maja serves an open-sandwich buffet of prawns, salmon and herring, alongside pastries and Otto ice cream. If you want the prawn sandwich, ring ahead.

The artists' materials shop is open daily by arrangement. A particular combination of things that is hard to find anywhere else.

Getting there: South at the Listerby roundabout towards Kuggeboda → left at the Majas konstbutik sign → follow the road out onto the island → follow signs to Majas Konstcafé
Season: 1 May – 28 September

Bredåkra Cemetery was established in 1861 as a shared burial ground for Ronneby's urban and rural parishes. Today it holds around 9,000 graves and remains one of the oldest well-preserved cemetery landscapes in the region - its ten sections still divided by the original cross-paths and central avenues.

Then the elm trees died. All 134 of them - killed by Dutch elm disease. The Church of Sweden commissioned artist Susanne Demåne to transform the dead trunks into sculpture. Five elms now stand on the cemetery grounds as carved artworks - one of them nearly five metres tall. Trees that were planted as symbols of mourning, now turned into monuments of memory. It is an unusual thing to see, and worth the short drive to Kallinge.

The cemetery also holds the family grave of sculptor Per Hasselberg's parents — a point of interest for anyone following art history in Blekinge.

What does the Björketorp Runestone say?

The Björketorp Runestone, dated to around 600 AD, carries one of Sweden's oldest runic inscriptions in Proto-Norse - a cursing text warning that whoever disturbs the monument will be struck down by treachery and destruction. It is one of only four places in Sweden where this archaic runic alphabet appears, all in Blekinge. The site is 7 km east of Ronneby, signed from the E22 at Leråkra.
