Fiskeguider på Mörrums Kronolaxfiske i Blekinge

Sport fishing as a profession

Mattias Holmquist catches the fish!

Join Mattias Holmquist for a full day at Mörrumsån or to Karlskrona and Listerby archipelago and take up the hunt for the coastline's impressive pike. Fishing with a guide is not the same as walking in trampled footprints, but rather an opportunity to take part in what others refuse to reveal. Fishing secrets that daily lead to fantastic experiences. And every now and then a real badger on the hook.

Fishing with Mattias Holmquist is like going out in nature with a good friend. He is an expert, pedagogical (after all, he has read both social psychology and philosophy) and has a high school teacher education in philosophy and sports. Besides, he is charming and makes sure to show the best fishing waters you can imagine. Which can be needed if you are not born on the site and want to take part in the varied bleaching fishing on the border between forest and the open sea.

- Mörrumsån is a real crown jewel. The accessibility is fantastic, and the river stretches through the beautiful bleaching landscape from Härnäs all the way down to Elleholm south of Mörrum, says Mattias Holmquist as we settle on a shaded tree and drink coffee.
Fishing is one thing, but as important as throwing the fly out over the water, just as important is taking the time to enjoy the outdoors - of course with coffee and lunch outdoors - and seize the opportunity to refine the throwing technique while still has a professional by his side.

- Much of my work is about guiding, but as often as I get the privilege of showing some of Blekinge's best fishing waters, I also get a chance to introduce entirely new people to the world of fishing. It is a task that I love a lot. To make someone else dare says Mattias who has worked with fishing since 2004. First part-time and then full-time since 2008.

- The part-time vision was degenerate right from the start, says Mattias with a big laugh. You can't fish part-time if you're like me. The guides, fishing and nature experiences simply take over. Besides, it's so fun to be out with other people that I simply can't help but be.

Fishing paradise

Personally, Mattias loves to fish and likes to go as soon as there is an opportunity. Occasionally myself, but almost always with a fishing buddy. Knowing the privilege of being able to fish full-time, while others dream of coming out and catching a couple of times a year gives him the peace of mind to enjoy the opportunities that, after all, pop up. In private he especially appreciates fishing for trout, pike and salmon. Preferably early in the season, as soon as the snow is gone.

- I especially like the early spring fishing on wintered trout. In the rest of the country - and on the continent - it is considered shameful to fish overwintered fish, but for us, in Blekinge, it is a clear sign that spring is finally here. While the ice is still rooted in northern Sweden, the white siphons bloom majestically along the Mörrum River. It is clear that you long for such days, says Mattias Holmquist while he and his colleague Stefan Karlsson walk through the beech forest from the parking lot down to Mörrumsån.

- Do you hear the birdsong? Now spring is here!

FACTS: Mattias Holmquist is a fishing guide and can be booked via Mörrum's Kronolax fishing. As of May 1, Mattias is the new coordinator for the fantastic Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve. Of course, he will continue to guide part-time.

4 fishing tips

1). Early spring fishing on wintered trout. Already in April, the season starts when you fish for lost trout (i.e. wintered fish that played in the fall) and then wintered in stagnant water. Lovely fishing in a beautiful spring environment with white sips and bird song all around.
2). Pike fishing in Karlskrona and Listerby Archipelago. Works throughout the winter season, from October until February. Put on your sweatpants and go into knee-deep water and look for old pike. Fly fishing at its best.
3). The autumn fishing in Mörrumsån. Late in the autumn, adult salmon and trout have been able to reach far up in the system up to Härnäs and Ebbamåla, and all pools are full of fish. It's not very easy to get a pacifier, but the excitement is enormous. 4). Rainbow in the lakes. Excellent fishing if you have not received pacifiers in a long time. Also, it is fun to fish for steelhead and take part in the beautiful countryside of the forest. Rainbow is found in both ponds and lakes around Blekinge.

Become a fishing guide

This is how you become a fishing guide: There are several different courses around the country, especially in folk high schools, but as vital as it is to get an adequate education is to fish as much as you can. Experience is essential and of course, the ability to teach others. Read pedagogy, social psychology or fishing/nature conservation. Like everything.

The need for fishing guide entrepreneurs is excellent, and the hospitality industry is growing fast. If you do not get a job, start your own company and offer fishing guide services to both private individuals and fishing facilities.
