Norje courthouse

The old courthouse of Lister County in Norje was built in 1793-1795 on the initiative of the member of parliament Knut Pehrsson, also called "King of Mjällby".

Beskrivning

Norje is located between the sea and the old lake Vesan. The road has been here since time immemorial.

Norje was for a long time the courthouse for Listers Härad. Courts were generally held in places that were conveniently located from a communication point of view. A courthouse included an execution ground, and public executions could be considered one of the great public entertainments. The courthouse, where many heavy sentences were probably handed down, still stands.

Other activities also belonged to a courthouse; the inn was important in the context. The court members would have their meals and travelers would be accommodated with horse-drawn carriages. The old inn still stands with its large stone barns. On the other side of the road is an older inn.

The courthouse and the inns still remind us that the place was once important. Large, well-built farmhouses connect to the community and, together with the 18th-century bridge's lavish cast-iron railing, complete the image of an older community.
