Gammalstorp Church

On an island in the former lake Vesan lies the 18th-century church, dating back to the 12th century.

Beskrivning

An older, Romanesque church was built in the 12th century or early 13th century on a small island in the former Lake Vesan. In earlier times, the shallow lake was important for communications within the area. The parish church was thus centrally located on an island that was easy to reach by boat.

During the 1790s, a new church was built by master builder Ludvig Dymling from Kristianstad. Due to unrest and war, the tower was not completed until thirty years later. It was paid for by a collection from the entire kingdom.

From the old church, among other things, a wooden sculpture of a holy abbot from the 15th century, the octagonal baptismal font from 1637 and the altarpiece were transferred. In 1772, an altarpiece from the latter half of the 17th century was purchased from a parish in Skåne. However, it was too large for the old church, so the piece was divided in brotherly agreement with the neighboring parish. Ysane thus received the upper part of the altarpiece with the resurrection, while Gammalstorp kept the part depicting the institution of the Lord's Supper. In the new church in Gammalstorp, the altarpiece became too small and was therefore enlarged.

Nowadays, in addition to the church, the island also houses the rectory and the parish house.
