Cold Bathing in Blekinge – all year round in remarkable settings

In Blekinge, cold bathing is a way of life. And all you really need is a pier, a ladder into the water, and a bit of courage.

More and more people are taking the plunge year-round these days – have you noticed? The number of dedicated cold bathers seems to have grown by the hundreds of percent. Some swim every day. Others settle for a dip once a month. In the sea or in a lake. With or without a sauna afterwards.

Where the sea meets the horizon and morning mist drifts across the water, your next dip is waiting.

The truly hardcore say no thanks to the sauna. They believe it interferes with the body’s natural ability to warm itself up. They step into the water wherever there’s a ladder, then warm up with nothing more than a woolly hat, a bathrobe and a cup of coffee on the pier. It’s bold. But you don’t have to be one of them to experience the magic.

In Blekinge’s beautiful waters – along the coast and by its lakes – there are great conditions for every kind of cold bather.
And if you’re someone who enjoys the crisp, cold air around your ears but prefers to sink your body into a steaming hot tub instead? Yes, we have that too.

Sauna by the water

For those who appreciate a little help warming up after an icy dip, Blekinge offers several wonderful sauna experiences right by the water. One particularly good choice in the western part of the region is Svettpärlans Bastu, located in the heart of Nogersund harbour.

This well-maintained sauna is run by the local heritage association, known for its strong community spirit and genuine hospitality. From here, a bathing ladder leads straight down into the clear waters of Hanö Bay – making it easy to move between cold sea and comforting warmth.

Dragsö Campsite

The floating sauna at Dragsö Camping is moored by a pier – and the view is just as impressive. The price includes the use of towels, bathrobes and slippers, making it easy to relax from the moment you arrive.

Bring your work team or a group of friends and alternate between icy cold dips in the sea and steaming hot moments in the tubs on deck. A shared experience that warms long after you leave the water.

Why all these dips?

What began as a Nordic tradition has become a global wellness movement – and for good reason. Regular cold bathing strengthens the immune system, brings mental clarity and improves sleep. Many describe the feeling after a dip as a reset for the brain – a moment of total presence that stays with you throughout the day.

But honestly, it’s not just about the health benefits.
It’s about the feeling. Standing on a pier at dawn, listening to the silence, taking a deep breath and then – splash. That instant jolt when the cold takes hold. The laughter afterwards, wrapping yourself in a bathrobe and realising that you’re alive. Truly alive.

The first dip was pure shock.
The tenth was pure joy.

Piers and bathing ladders

Wherever you see a pier or a jetty with a bathing ladder, there’s an opportunity for cold bathing. It really is that simple.

Choose a sheltered bay with a beautiful view, so you have something to rest your eyes on while warming up afterwards with a cup of coffee and a cosy bathrobe.

Bryggor och badstegar

In Blekinge, the sea is always close – to everyday life, to the body, and to each other. Here, even a simple dip becomes a moment of presence.

In fact, it’s hard to find a spot by the water in Blekinge that doesn’t offer beautiful views. The archipelago shimmers in the east, beech forests lean gently toward the shores in the west, and everywhere there’s that feeling of being just a little bit at the edge of the world. In the very best way.

Along the entire coastline, piers and bathing ladders are waiting for you. No booking. No opening hours. No rules. Just you, the sea and the morning mist. Bring a thermos, a warm bathrobe, and maybe a friend who can snap a photo when you let out your victory shout after the dip.

A rare beauty – Karlshamns Kallbadhus

Even as cold bathing grows in popularity, purpose-built cold bathhouses remain few and far between in south-eastern Sweden.

Karlshamns Kallbadhus is a rare beauty – a place where a cold dip becomes a refined design experience.

Here, you can swim and enjoy the sauna with breathtaking panoramic views of Hanö Bay and the Baltic Sea. The bathhouse is located in Näsviken, right on the seaside promenade between the town centre and the fishing harbour of Vägga.

There are separate sections with sauna and sea bathing for women and men, as well as a shared lounge where everyone can gather after the invigorating dips.

Recovery through sauna, cold water and beautiful views – all in one place.

The building itself is worth the visit. Its architecture blends seamlessly with the coastline, and the large windows frame the horizon like living artworks. On cold winter mornings, when mist hangs low over the water and steam rises from the sauna, it’s easy to understand why Scandinavians have sought out places like this for generations.

The entire bathhouse can be booked privately outside regular opening hours, while public access is available via key tag. Perfect for those who want a touch of luxury – without losing the connection to the wild.
