Sölvesborg Castle Ruins

The ruins of what was once the pride of Sölvesborg, the castle dating back to the 13th century. It was the largest and most important of the medieval fortifications in Eastern Denmark.

Beskrivning

Today, the castle ruins and the beautiful castle park are well worth a visit and a walk! The old castle was by far the largest and most important of the medieval fortifications in Eastern Denmark and created the conditions for extensive trade. In 1332, Denmark lost the Scanian lands to Sweden. Denmark's Valdemar Atterdag reunited the country under central power and in 1360 Sölvesborg once again came under the Danish empire.

Sölvesborg Castle began to be built in the 13th century, but its heyday did not begin until around 1360.

In 1452, Karl Knutsson burned the castle, and in 1525-26 it became a retreat for Sören Norby during his pirate expeditions.

By 1564, the castle's military importance was all but over.

During the 17th century, the core became a quarry and by around 1750 everything was in ruins.

Finds from investigations are exhibited at Sölvesborg Museum.
