Snapphaneeken

Very old oak tree with a legend

Beskrivning

Very old oak tree where legend has hung snapphanar during the 1600s when Sweden and Denmark were at war. The forests of Skåne and Blekinge were full of "snapphanar" who fought against the Swedes.

There are many legends about the tree and how it got its name. One of them says that Johan Gyllenstierna, Governor General of Skåne, Halland and Blekinge, should put to death 20 "snapphanare" by hanging in the tree. No executioner had to do the hanging, as one of "snapphanare" offered to do work ift his life was spared. This was Gyllenstierna on, leading to 19 "snapphanar" hung in the oak, and he was free.
