Sturkö Gästhamn, Blekinge

There are islands you visit. And then there’s Sturkö.

Blekinge’s largest island is just 20 minutes from Karlskrona by car – yet feels like another world. Here, rugged cliffs meet quiet coves, medieval history blends with military secrets, and the scent of smoked herring drifts on a wind that always knows where it’s going.

It’s not grand in an overblown way. It’s grand in the way that truly matters – the kind that only hits you when you’re already on your way home.

Sturkö is an island that delivers on many levels.

Spend the day around Tjurkö’s former stone quarry, where limestone cliffs meet walking trails and reclaimed industrial spaces have become some of the archipelago’s best spots for a swim. The surrounding bays are calm, crystal-clear, and made for lingering.

Then there’s Sturkö Windmill – a beautifully preserved 19th-century mill at the heart of the island. It remained in use until 1964 and now opens during summer with a café, exhibitions, and sweeping views. Enjoy a coffee upstairs and take in the panorama over Bredavik. Simple. Exactly as it should be.
