Submarine 137 grounding site Torumskär

On October 27, 1981, the whole world's attention was directed to Karlskrona and the archipelago where a Soviet Whiskey-class submarine ran aground on the Torhamnaskär sker at the entrance to Gåsefjärden.

Beskrivning

In the middle of the military protection area outside Karlskrona, Blekinge, the Soviet submarine U 137 ran aground at Torhamnaskär in Gåsefjärden, about one mile southeast of Karlskrona. They did not manage to get off the ground with the help of the submarine's diesel engines, they ran the engines at high speed but nothing helped. Islanders on the surrounding islands heard the noise of the engines but could not see anything in the darkness. At the time of the incident, the grounding was seen as evidence of extensive Soviet underwater activity in Swedish waters.
